"Mom, why do you put make-up on?"
"I really like the way it looks."
"You're lying with your face."
"Whut? What do you mean, Danny?" (my 11 year old son)
"It's like you are covering up who you are."
Ugh.
I gave him a whole speech about the last vestiges of the patriarchy, unreasonable beauty standards for women, and ageism in our society and that I get totally swept away in it.
He cocked his head confused.
The truth is - I hate to see my face and body aging. See here
And it's become abundantly clear that I could have bought a couple of small islands, sent myself to space and back, and probably solved the national deficit with the money I've spent over the years just trying to keep up with looking youthful and vibrant.
Mind you, I love the way my face looks made-up, hair done, outfit tight (not necessarily a tight outfit). And this does NOT mean that I am not grateful for my health, capable body, wisdom, etc.
So it got me thinking -
Would you want me to do a raw Late Learner Podcast episode on beauty and aging?
AND
Is this something you struggle with, too? What is YOUR position on aging?
Gracefully go grey? Make-up free? No botox/fillers? Plastic surgery? Upkeep with great skin care, good nutrition? Lasers?
Truly no judgment here. I just know that this particular topic keeps coming up again and again with my friends and wanted to shine a light.
As always, it's so much deeper than just vanity.
Will you hit reply and let me know?
xo,
Allison
