Mind changing by choice

I changed my mind...

August 22, 20243 min read

In college, "A.M." might as well have stood for "Allison's Missing."

As a night owl, no alarm, phone call, or flying object could wake me up in the morning.

I even managed to fail a communications class—my major, btw 🤦‍♀️—because I scheduled it for 9:30 a.m., a time that might as well have been the crack of dawn.

I even got fired from my job at Bennigan's because I was chronically late to E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G, including my morning shifts.

Whoops!

I suspected I might be a f*ck-up because I couldn't seem to get my sh*t together.

But over the years, I had to have a different conversation with myself.

I had to change my mind.

And I also had to watch my declarations that were cutting off possibilities.

What are declarations, you ask?

What do you declare that prevents you from getting what you truly desire?

I used to declare, "I hate getting up early."

Now, I say, "I'm changing my relationship with mornings."

This mindset shift led me to sign up for my first half marathon, despite never enjoying f*cking hating running before.

By changing my relationship with running, I've discovered a new way to give my mind the space it needs to clear and think.

It's become an exercise in mind-decluttering more than actual exercise.

What do you declare that might be holding you back?

Instead of saying "I hate..." try "I'm changing my relationship to..."

Some ideas on what declarations might be worth shifting:

  • I hate public speaking (podcasting could be a nice alternative 🎤 )

  • I hate new routines

  • I hate working out (there might be a style you haven't tried yet that could change that)

  • I hate work (call me! allisonhare.com/schedule I can help)

  • I hate people who don't believe what I believe (*I'm working on this!)

  • I hate PowerPoints. (Canva is another story, though 😍 )

  • I hate being in the car so much (Might I suggest a good podcast like Late Learner?)

  • I hate myself (sending love 💓)

But I invite you to consider another alternative:

"I am changing my relationship to...."

You can simply change your mind.

And speaking of changing your mind, what about changing someone ELSE'S mind?

As the political season wreaks havoc on our social media feeds, TV's, and candidate lawn signs everywhere, this is a time when we brace ourselves, hold on as tight as we can, and hope more relationships don't end up in the collateral damage pile.

But there is another way.

Esteemed science journalist and bestselling author of You Are Not So Smart and How Do Minds Change, David McRaney is breaking down scientifically researched approaches to change people's minds.

And speaking of the political season, this is a great opportunity to repair some of the relationships that might have been fractured from the last 8 years of politics.

I can't wait for you to revisit this conversation.

What are you changing your relationship to? As always, here to support and cheering you on!
