EP224: Easy lessons learned the hard way: my first 1/2 marathon

I never played for fastest time, only completion.

Many years ago, I joined the cult of Crossfit.

I never worked out before. Like, ever.

So to go from my usual pasttimes of shopping for new clothes 💅 and watching my friends play beer pong in someone's basement to flipping tires and figuring out what tf a kip pull-up was, well, that was big for me.

I was nursing a heartbreak and naturally, wanted to go to where HE hung out (Crossfit gym) where I might accidentally run into him and he would obviously recognize his big mistake and come running back to me. 👀

What TF was I even doing here?

I was NEVER an athlete. In fact, I'm not sure I ever moved my body away from the couch as a kid because duh, MTV.

I was always last to be picked on any gym team.

Slow, no hand-eye coordination or coordination in general, paired with not really caring was never a winning combination for team sports.

Back to Crossfit - I knew I wanted to TRY IT.

But there were a LOT of meathead-looking dudes that didn't look like me.

There were a lot of strong AF women there, too.

But they did something that was so small, but very mighty.

Before each class, the trainer would have everyone quickly introduce themselves and answer a silly icebreaker question.

Would you believe that KNOWING the names of the people you are working out with - was probably the greatest bonding experience and I am still really close to the people I did CF with so many years ago?

And every time I went to class, my goal was never to PR (hit a personal record), the goal was to simply finish.

I celebrated that I showed up and celebrated that I finished.

This is one of those few times it's not bad to set the bar low, baby!

What activity would YOU want to try where you could take the pressure off and just celebrate SHOWING UP?

I did something big this past weekend.

I ran my first 1/2 marathon.

I've trained for weeks - but hit a mighty detour where the marathon I was training for - I wasn't able to go.

And I learned 3 simple lessons that could literally change everything for you.

Go and listen, ya hear? Oh, and I love you!

PS. I recorded a quick recap of my 1/2 marathon (which was decidedly NOT quick).
