Two women praying with their hands over their hearts

Escaping Christian Patriarchy: What Tia Levings Taught Me About Religious Trauma and Hidden Control

July 24, 20255 min read

Y'all, I just had one of those conversations that completely shifted my perspective on what's happening in our country right now. My guest Tia Levings, New York Times bestselling author of "A Well-Trained Wife," dropped truth bombs about Christian fundamentalism and religious trauma that I'm still processing days later.

If you've been wondering what the hell is going on with politics, women's rights, and this whole tradwife movement that's everywhere on social media, this conversation will connect dots you didn't even know existed. Spoiler alert: it's way darker than sourdough starters and sundresses.

The "Cult Within a Cult" That's Been Hiding in Plain Sight

Here's what blew my mind: Tia explained how Christian patriarchy operates as a "cult within a cult" - meaning these families look like your neighbors next door. Maybe a little conservative, sure, but not living on some isolated compound. They're infiltrating mainstream Christianity through what she calls "patient strategy."

The quiverfull movement (having as many babies as possible to win the culture war through population) has been working for decades to manifest Christian nationalism in our politics. And guess what? They succeeded. What seemed fringe when Tia first started talking about it is now happening in real time.

As someone who grew up going to church but not in a fundamentalist way, I was skeptical at first. Could this really be as widespread as she claimed? But then I started seeing the patterns everywhere - and you will too once you know what to look for.

When "Traditional Values" Become Sanctified Abuse

The most visceral part of Tia's story was learning about "Christian domestic discipline" - which she calls "non-consensual BDSM in church clothes." I'm not being dramatic here. In these communities, patriarchal ideologies justify physical violence against women as spiritual training.

Tia shared a line from her book that haunts me: "Hitting me was no longer taboo. It was holy." When you're taught that men are spiritually responsible for everything that happens in their homes - including their wife's thoughts and behavior - abuse becomes sanctified as godly discipline.

This isn't happening in some far-off cult compound. This is happening in suburban neighborhoods where women are being told that submission means accepting violence "for their spiritual good."

The Psychology Behind the "Fundy Baby Voice"

Have you ever noticed how some women in conservative politics use this weird, breathy baby voice? Think Michelle Duggar or Katie Britt's State of the Union response. Tia calls this the "fundy baby voice" - and it's not an accident.

This voice pattern is deliberately taught to keep women sounding childlike, non-threatening, and submissive. It's cult psychology in action. When Tia escaped her situation, she had to work with speech therapists to find her actual adult voice because she'd been conditioned to sound like a preschooler for decades.

The goal? Keep women from sounding like they have command and presence in their space. Because a woman speaking with authority is "anti-patriarchal" and threatens the entire system.

Why Your Joy is Actually Rebellion

Here's something that shifted my entire perspective on resistance: Tia explained that happiness and joy are forms of rebellion against fundamentalist control. These systems work by making life "tiny and tedious and rote" - they take away everything that's fun because joy is contagious and makes you harder to control.

Think about it: they ban books, movies, dancing, good food. They increase your work and take away rest. Then they tell you suffering makes you more like Jesus.

So when we choose joy, when we share what makes us truly happy (not toxic positivity, but real happiness), we're actively resisting their high-control tactics. This hit me hard because I've been feeling guilty for trying to find moments of lightness when everything feels so heavy.

How to Resist Without Burning Out

I asked Tia what to do when the pace of chaos feels overwhelming, and her advice was revolutionary: Don't accept what's unacceptable.

She reminded me that the relentless news cycle is designed to break us - that's literally what "breaking news" does. But we can resist by:

  • Setting boundaries with information consumption

  • Choosing one thing to focus on instead of trying to fix everything

  • Remember that rest can be resistance too

  • Finding our own special way to chip away at what they're building

Tia also shared something brilliant: she diminishes patriarchal figures by adding an "E" to their names (Mikey Johnson, Dougie Wilson, Petey Hegseth). It helps bring them down to size in her imagination, which reduces the fear response and helps her take action instead of freezing.

The Path Forward Through Grace, Not Shame

What gives me hope from this conversation is Tia's approach to people still trapped in these systems. Having escaped Christian fundamentalism herself, she knows that cults break through grace, not shame. People leave high-control situations through baby steps when they feel safe to change their minds.

This means our job isn't to attack people in these systems, but to be receptive and allow grace for them to wake up. Tia actively engages with MAGA people and young tradwives, affirming their humanity while gently asking questions that crack their facades.

Your Voice Matters More Than You Know

If you're reading this and thinking, "Holy shit, I had no idea this was happening," then you're exactly who needs to hear Tia's message. Religious deconstruction isn't just for people who've been in these systems - it's for all of us who need to understand the forces shaping our reality.

The tradwife aesthetic might look harmless on TikTok, but understanding the ideology behind it helps us protect ourselves and the people we love. Knowledge is power, and speaking up about these patterns helps others recognize them too.

Your story, your questions, your resistance - it all matters. Because the alternative is watching our freedoms disappear while pretending everything is normal.
