Sudden Changes

Sudden Changes

September 12, 20243 min read

What do you do when you get jerked into a new reality?

Laid off. Broken bone. New boss. Motherhood (I mean...). Promotion. Dating someone new.

Some sudden changes are welcome. Some, not so much.

We had some big sudden changes in our home this week.

My son has been going to a small private school since Kindergarten.

He came home last week and said he wanted to switch to public school.

WHAT?!?!?!

Out of the blue. No problems at his current school. He knew the routine and felt safe and comfortable and has GREAT friends there.

He went to school happy and came home happy every day.

WHY NOW???

He was ready to try something different.

He felt he would be better served in the nearby public middle school.

M-I-D-D-L-E S-C-H-O-O-L! You know, where schoolwork is easy, friends are so simple, and there is no such thing as raging hormones. 🙃 Not to mention, the school is probably a gajillion-x bigger than what he is used to.

So we let him lead his own way.

I cried all morning on the last day of his former school. The school has been good to him and our family.

He started his new school this week.

Switching anything - either quickly or slowly will always have risks and unknowns.

We learned a few things through this process that I wanted to pass along to you:

  1. Make decisions for change while you are at choice - if you run yourself into the ground doing something you hate or have an unexpected illness, for instance, your options run out quickly

  2. Listen to your inner compass - what's been weighing on your heart and just won't let go? Go chase it down. 🌈

  3. Make the mental switch FIRST. Try it on like a hat. Put yourself in the seat where you want to be and CLAIM IT. Then say YES!

Oh, and our son came home from his first day literally squealing with joy, he was so happy.

Hire the coach. Take the job. Try the new workout. Go on that date. File the divorce papers. Switch the career. Start the podcast.

There are people you don't even know yet that are literally waiting for you to show up even more fully!

And if you are worried about everything needing to be perfect before you make a change, I've got the perfect episode of Late Learner Podcast for you.

We are revisiting the conversation with Katherine Morgan Schafler, the author of the bestselling book, The Perfectionists' Guide to Losing Control.

You've probably been taught that being a perfectionist is BAD - but it's time to rethink the entire thing on how to make it work for you.
