The Battle Royale - Extroverts v Introverts

September 06, 20232 min read

"I don't trust him. He's too quiet."

"Mom, he's my boyfriend. He's cool. He's just shy."

"Yeah, why doesn't he speak up more? What's he hiding?" side eye 😒

Our home growing up had 9 PEOPLE LIVING IN IT. NINE!

Me + 5 siblings + 2 parents + 1 grandmother + endless guests = NEVER QUIET. 🤫

Heaven forbid you needed something; you'd have to bust out the neon flares 🌈 , blow an air horn 📣 , and break a window or body part 🦵 just to get any attention at all.

It's really no wonder I'm an extrovert.

But am I really? Or was it a product of my conditioning?

With more studies and focus on introverts (to my introvert readers - have you read Quiet yet?), there's been some blurriness around falling in one camp or the other - and how to understand what's what?

As usual, I think the answer is more nuanced - and with a more increased intention culturally on connection and understanding each other, this topic needed to be revisited.

And turns out there is SO much misunderstood about each one that I brought fan favorite (and UBER-introvert) Cindy Robinson back onto the Late Learner Podcast to go head-to-head.

We crowd-sourced some questions that were so fascinating and we both walked away with a completely different perspective than we thought.

Here are some of the questions we explored:

  • Is this very topic an antiquated false dichotomy? 🧐

  • Why do extroverts like to talk on the phone? ☎️

  • Do introverts feel comfortable when there's silence in a conversation? 🤫

  • What happens when your partners' introvert/extrovertism is opposite to you? 🗣️

  • Do parents push extroversion on their kids? 😱

  • FOMO 😮

  • What each one is REALLY thinking (despite outward appearances)? 🧠

  • Ambiverts? Is anyone really only one or the other? 🤷‍♀️

  • So much more (I mean, just listen already) 🎧

And then there's the showdown where Cindy called me completely out on my complaints about some introverts' behavior. Whoops! 🙈
